Abstract

The purpose of this study is to research on the removal characteristic of Arsenic by media using bittern which is wasted from salt pond. The physical characteristics were obtained when the bittern media was sintered at 800 ∼ 900℃. The specific surface area was 16.670 m2/g and water absorption rate is 42.3%. Also, the compressive strength was 28.3 kgf/cm2 and the total pore volume was 0.00818 cm2/g. The bittern media was composed by SiO2 55.3%, in particular, MgO (19.2%) is existed very high concentration by effect of bittern is include high concentration of magnesium ion (Mg2+). Also, the result of X-Ray diffraction, the bittern media was crystallized by Forsterite (Mg2SiO4). Various amounts of bittern were mixed with zeolite to produce the bittern media and 20% bittern media was maximization for arsenic removal in the solution. The removal efficiency ratings of the bittern media for arsenic was great than 90% after adding 40% of the media in aqueous solution. Reaction time of the bittern media was very fast and most of the adsorption reaction for arsenic was completed within few hours. Batch experiments was duplicated at various pH conditions of aqueous solution and As removal efficiency highly maintained at wide pH ranges (pH 5 ~ 9).
