Effects of Job Values, Career Preparation Behavior, and Resilience on College Life Adaptation among Maritime College Students
Abstract
This study examined how maritime college students’ job values, career preparation behaviors, and resilience influence their adaptation to college life. Data were collected through a structured self-report questionnaire administered from December 4 to December 8, 2023. The sample consisted of 339 students from the 1st to 4th year, spanning seven departments within the Maritime College at M Maritime University in J Province, selected through convenience sampling. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS/Win 27.0, employing descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The main findings are as follows. The factors affecting adaptation to college life were career preparation behaviors (β=.559, p<.001), job values (β=.162, p<.001), resilience (β=.147, p<.001), and previous semester’s grades (β=.067, p<.039). Furthermore, after controlling for demographic and school-related variables, hierarchical regression analysis showed that job values, career preparation behaviors, and resilience had a high explanatory power of 71.6% for their adaptation to college life. Based on these findings, it is recommended to develop programs that assess maritime college students’ job values at different levels and enhance individualized career preparation behaviors and resilience, which are essentially psychological coping resources that aid successful adaptation to college life.
