Abstract

Among the potential eco-friendly ships of the future, hydrogen ships are attracting the greatest amount of attention. However, to use hydrogen as an energy source for these eco-friendly ships, it is critical to ensure safety. In this study, we reviewed domestic and international regulations related to hydrogen and safety standards for hydrogen fuel cells, storage facilities, and charging facilities. We also reviewed the leak and flame warning systems that should be considered when developing hydrogen ship safety standards. Standards for ventilation systems and explosion damage prevention systems were presented. Although we currently do not have safety standards for hydrogen ships and hydrogen charging stations, to achieve international competitiveness safety standards must be developed across a wide range of applications, from practical regulations related to hydrogen ships to laws. In addition, we will need to analyze in detail future trends in IMO regulations and international standards and actively respond to them.
